| Darwin and Hitler: In Their Own Words

As David Berlinski recently noted, “the thesis that there is a connection between Darwin and Hitler is widely considered a profanation.” But striking an indignant pose — feathers in full ruffle — is not an answer to such a serious charge, especially when the words of both Darwin and Hitler speak otherwise. Those defending Darwin cannot have read his Descent of Man, wherein he applies the principles of natural selection to human beings — a thing he prudently avoided in his earlier Origin of Species. In the Descent, the eugenic and racial inferences are clearly and startlingly drawn by Darwin himself. Darwin understood the eugenic implications of his own theory, and warned his readers against imminent evolutionary backsliding. “It is surprising how soon a want of care, or care wrongly directed, leads to the degeneration of a domestic race; but excepting in the case of man himself, hardly any one is so ignorant as to allow his worst animals to breed.” Insert a few terms like “Aryan” or “Jew” and that could be in any Nazi screed. “If … various checks … do not prevent the reckless, the vicious and otherwise inferior members of society from increasing at a quicker rate than the better class of men, the nation will retrograde, as has occurred too often in the history of the world. We must remember that progress is no invariable rule.” While Darwin tried to soften the hard implications (by suggesting that we not kill the rogues; rather, we should just keep them from breeding), the eugenic edifice was his. And the racial thing? Evolution is driven by competition, and competition brings extinction. Darwin notes, matter-of-factly in the Descent, that one tribe extinguishing another is the very engine of human evolution. In his words, “extinction follows chiefly from the competition of tribe with tribe, race with race,” allowing the victorious tribe or race to pass on their superior endowments. That is not a moral complaint; it is a detached scientific description uttered by Darwin entirely without angst. As the engine of evolution is never idle, it is also a prophecy. Again, his own words: At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilized races of man will almost certainly exterminate and replace throughout the world the savage races. At the same time the anthropomorphous [i.e., most human-looking] apes … will no doubt be exterminated. The break will then be rendered wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilized state, as we may hope, than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as at present between the negro or Australian and the gorilla. Get it? Ranking the human races, we find the Caucasian at top, and down at the bottom, dangling at the edge of humanity, “the negro or Australian” who is just an evolutionary hair’s-breadth away from the anthropomorphous gorilla. In pushing upwards to the über-Caucasian, evolution also exterminates all the “intermediate species,” so that natural selection will do away with the Negro, the aboriginal Australian, and the gorilla. Like it or not, Darwin’s eugenic and racial ideas spread from him, and infected both Europe and America. Now for Adolf. I suspect that, just as a lot of folks haven’t read Darwin’s execrable Descent of Man, so also they feel free to enter the debate without having read Hitler’s Mein Kampf. It is inaccurate to blame the entire of Hitler’s evil on anti-Semitism precisely because his anti-Semitism was part of a larger biological vision. “National Socialism is nothing but applied biology,” said the deputy Party leader of the Nazis, Rudolf Hess. As Hitler made clear in Mein Kampf, the fundamental political category is biological. Consequently, “the highest aim of human existence is not the maintenance of a State or Government but rather the conservation of the race.” This aim accords with Hitler’s larger Darwinian view of the cosmos, wherein the “fundamental law of necessity” reigning “throughout the realm of Nature” is that “existence is subject to the law of eternal struggle and strife….where the strong are always the masters of the weak and where those subject to such laws must obey them or be destroyed.” Survival of the fittest. Hence Hitler’s creation of a kind of “folk” religion, that is, a religion of the racially defined Volk. Worship was directed to the Germanic race as the only one capable of eliminating the weak and bringing the übermensch – “superman”– into existence in accordance with the cruelties of Nature. Hitler’s words all too clearly portend the atrocities to come when the Nazis gained power: [T]he völkisch concept of the world recognizes that the primordial racial elements are of the greatest significance for mankind. In principle, the State is looked upon only as a means to an end and this end is the conservation of the racial characteristics of mankind. Therefore on the völkisch principle we cannot admit that one race is equal to another. By recognizing that they are different, the völkisch concept separates mankind into races of superior and inferior quality. On the basis of this recognition it feels bound, in conformity with the eternal Will that dominates the universe, to postulate the victory of the better and stronger and the subordination of the inferior and weaker…. For in a world which would be composed of mongrels and negroids all ideals of human beauty and nobility and all hopes of an idealized future for our humanity would be lost for ever. Hence the folk concept of the world is in profound accord with Nature’s will; because it restores the free play of the forces which will lead the race through stages of sustained reciprocal education towards a higher type, until finally the best portion of mankind will possess the earth and will be free to work in every domain all over the world and even reach spheres that lie outside the earth. According to Hitler, the Jews threatened the superior race with degradation, but so did the “mongrels and negroids,” the Slavs, the Gypsies, the handicapped, the retarded, and all the other inferior biological misfits. All this doesn’t mean that Darwinism was the sole cause of Hitler’s barbarism. But it does make clear that Darwinism must shoulder its share of the moral burden, because the connection is undeniable.

E existem milhares deles a falar de Hitler. Quando mencionam a evolução, e são poucos, é só no sentido de um aproveitamento por Hitler de uma falsa intrepretação da teoria. Como Hitler fez fez com a religião.

Já sei que não torces, mas isto é absurdo, porque quem decide quais são os genes bons e maus é a natureza em cada contexto, deixando funcionar a selecção natural. Tudo o resto são tretas.
Por isso Darwin concordando com as vacinas (ao contrário do que afirmou o vosso mentor Jonatas), dizia que elas a longo prazo diminuiam capacidade humana de resistência e a sua adaptabilidade.
Nunca em lado algum darwin ou a evolução advoga a intervenção humana para substituir o papel da natureza na evolução do homem.
Até porque (quem leu a evolução das espécies, que não é o teu caso, perceberá) uma alteração positiva hoje é negativa amanhã e vice-versa.
Na natureza não existem genes bons nem maus, existem aqueles mais preparados num determinado momento, para sobreviver e que serão por sua vez sunbstituidos.
O que o Ludwig diz é verdade, e é tão só a base da teoria da evolução. Se não o percebes não compreendes minimamente a teoria, pelo que compras o que te venderem, verdade ou mentira, tal como a pureza racial.

As an aside many antievolutionists point to the complete title of Darwin’s seminal work; On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life, and claim that the reference to “favored races” illustrates that his evolutionary theories were intended to support racism. Contrary to such assertions this was not a reference to human races per se (one should note that Darwin barely mentioned humans at all in this book). Rather it was merely a reference to localized variations within a species (generic), which may, in a changing environment, grant greater survival value. None of the racist rhetoric about the supposed inherent superiority of certain human races over others was suggested or implied in this.”
A mim parece-me muito mais sustentável que prosaica teologica deste wiker, e contraria de forma clara a tua acusação de racismo forte e duro a Darwin.

Writings of a philosophical and social nature whose content deals with the false scientific enlightenment of primitive Darwinism and Monism (279).
Apparently, the science was not allowed and was rejected between the times of Hitler’s rise to power and the Final Solution.

Mais um mentira Sabino:
Theodore Pösche autor de “Uma Contribuição à Antropologia Histórica” (Ein Beitrag zur historischen Anthropologie), publicada em 1878 defende a idéia de que, se havia muitos povos com língua ariana, apenas o povo alemão poderia dizer-se legítima raça ariana. Ele situa a origem desse povo nos pântanos de Rokitno, na Lituânia ocidental, onde são freqüentes os casos de albinismo.
Estas idéias, longe de serem refutadas à época, ganharam o reforço, em 1883 e 1886, pelo trabalho de Karl Penka.
Fundamentação ideológica
Pösche apoiara-se, com convicção, nas teorias da poligenia de Louis Agassiz, recusando-se a aceitar que os diversos tipos humanos eram – como defendia o darwinismo – originários de um mesmo ancestral comum. Por outro lado, rejeita a idéia de uma “raça caucasiana”, defendida por Blumenbach. Sustenta suas idéias, apoiando-se em estudos de A. Ecker, especialista no estudos de crânios germânicos, que lhe era contemporâneo – que “os antigos alemães eram os puros dolicocéfalos”, e rejeitando as idéias de miscigenação dos arianos com os povos nativos, defendida por Rudolf Virchow.
Com o trabalho de Pösche surge uma nova espécie animal: a “raça loira”, oriunda dos pântanos lituanos, com as seguintes características: dolicocéfalo, occipital proeminente, testa baixa, pele clara: era o fundamento sobre o qual toda uma ideologia racista iria ser erguida, pela ação de Adolf Hitler.

E para que não digas que sou tendencioso aqui vai uma que te agrada:
Mesmo Charles Darwin, que era abolicionista, acreditava numa superioridade do homem caucasiano e num distanciamento desse com as outras raças. Ele dizia: ”o hiato será mais amplo, porque compreenderá a distância entre o homem, que terá alcançado um estágio de civilização superior ao do caucásico, e um símio como o babuíno, e não como acontece atualmente, a distância entre o negro, ou o australiano, e o gorila”
Traduzido, quer dizer que no futuro o novo homem civilizado terá um hiato maior com os babúinos, do que o negro da actualidade e o gorila.
Isto revela preconceito racico, que era geral e aceite pela totalidade da civilização ocidental da epoca (salvo raras excepções é claro).
Darwin era anti-esclavagismo, gostas dos negros e indios. Nada que se compare ao Agassiz e companhia crentes em Deus.

Podemos ler:

esquece-se de ler a frase que vem logo a seguir:

Nor could we check our sympathy, if so urged by hard reason, without deterioration in the noblest part of our nature. The surgeon may harden himself whilst performing an operation, for he knows that he is acting for the good of his patient; but if we were intentionally to neglect the weak and helpless, it could only be for a contingent benefit, with a certain and great present evil. Traduzindo, Darwin não defende um “exterminio” activo dos individuos mais fracos – a sociedade encarregar-se-á disso “naturalmente”. Isto é, pelas palavras de Darwin, estatisticamente haverá uma maior percentagem de sucesso quer em termos de conseguir matrimonio quer posteriormente em termos de procriação por parte dos indivíduos vistos pela sociedade como mais fortes/bonitos/aptos/inteligentes (riscar conforme a preferencia do possivel conjuge) por comparação com individuos menos habilitados em qualquer um destes ou outros pontos.
Tal como acontece hoje em dia, e sempre aconteceu: um indivíduo interessante e rico terá mais pretendentes que outro interessante e pobre, que por sua vez terá mais pretendentes que outro completamente desinteressante e pobre. É essa ideia que Darwin quis fazer passar, e não a do exterminio activo. Que outros deturpassem a ideia, isso será com eles.

Mentira, Matts.
A primeira vez que esse termo foi usado foi por outro evolucionista e pegou por ser uma simplifacação do conceito “apto”.
Nem Darwin, nem os verdadeiros evolucionistas usam o conceito superior, porque ele não faz sentido.
Aquele que sobrevive pode ser o mais fraco, e muitas vezes é.
Quando das perturbações climáticas que avassalaram o planeta após o choque de um meteorito, extinguiram-se 2/3 das espécies.
Os que sobreviveram e progrediram foram em maioria os mais fracos, os mais adaptados ao “anormal”, a condições extremas.
O naturalismo / biologismo nazi não tem nada a ver com ciência. Tal como o conceito racismo nazi é muito mais extensivo que o normal e se propaga a povos: judeus e arianos não são raças, tal como eslavos.
Hitler usou e distorceu a seu bel-prazer estes conceitos, tal como fez com a Biblia. Uma verdade cientifica não pode ser acusad por ser deturpada e usada no sentido do mal. A teoria da evolução tem sido usada como justificação para muitas coisas devido ao simplismo e ignorância dos seus meandros (como tu fazes Matts).
Eu poderia jogar o mesmo jogo que tu e acusar a religião:
A fonte última de tudo, o valor supremo, o fundamento justificador da hierarquizção das raças é, oara Hitler sem contestação, o próprio Deus. É ele que quer a sua existência, a sua desigualdade e a superioridade dos fortes sobre os fracos, constatações essas que são a expressão da vontade divina. O Ariano reina e deve reinar sobre os outros homens. Aquele que transgride esta exigência atinge o prórprio Deus.
É esta a intrepretação de Hitler. Para mim estúpida, tal como a da raça e da biologia. Não vamos culpar a religião e a biblia porque um louco se apropriou de forma demagogica e errada desse livro. Da mesma forma não o devemos fazer em relação a teorias cientificas. Nenhuma delas aponta o caminho da destruição de povos nem da superioridade, nem sequer do eugenismo (outro aproveitamento da evolução e que o prório Darwin renegava).
Sei que advogas que Hitler de MK é diferente. Mas isso é absurdo.
A ideologia nazi está toda no MK. É seguido á letra quando Hitler assumiu o poder: o anti-semitismo primário, a destruição dos judeus, o espaço vital para leste e escravidão dos eslavos, o eugenismo social e assassinio dos associais, a guerra, o aumento do número de arianos, etc.
Tudo estava no MK. Quando chegou ao poder Hitler e capangas trataram de passar à prática a teoria do Mein Kampf. Não há diferença entre Hitler de 29 e Hitler de 33-40. Depois disso começou a enlouquecer e já é dificil saber o que é ideologia e loucura pura.
